Simple Techniques That Can Be Used For Cleaning Cowhide Rugs

Cowhide rugs are immensely popular as a decorative piece due to their high durability and stain resistant properties. They offer ease of maintenance. However, they too like other household items may require regular cleaning. In order to preserve the quality and beauty of the rugs, it is advisable to avoid cleaning them with unnatural compounds and chemicals. The rugs may be cleaned using organic substances. A certain degree of care can ensure that the rugs last long and retain their unique look. They may be cleaned in the following ways for various kinds of stains and spills:
Liquid spills
Liquid spills can cause future stains. It is hence important to soak them as quickly as possible. Old, ingrained stains may be cleaned using soapy water in a damp cloth. This technique proves effective for cleaning stains of various types.
Plant based natural fibres and various types of synthetic materials resist changes in their pH balance. They possess this quality due to being processed. Leather rugs made of cowhides are dependent on their inherent natural properties which give them their unique appearance. They are hence more sensitive and respond readily to changes in alkalinity. For such rugs cleaners may be used in order to maintain their pH balance. Cleaning the rugs in this way can make them last longer.
Organic shampoos which are non alkaline can also be used to clean liquid spills from luxury rugs. As an alternative, a solution of vinegar in water may also be used. The solution effectively retains the pH balance and protects the colour and fibre of the rug. Using this solution, unpleasant odours emanating from the rugs can also be removed.
Food stains
Food stains on cowhide rugs can be scraped away using a spoon, dull knife or a bristled brush. Brushing in the direction similar to that of the fibers can also help in maintaining the rug. This technique is useful for removing food stains of various types. The other food stains from such handcrafted rugs can be removed by using a non alkaline soap or vinegar solution.

Grease stains
Grease stains can effectively be removed in a manner similar to that of removal of food stains. Brushes or spoons may be used to scrape away grease. Organic elements may then be used to clean the stains with the help of a damp cloth, post which they can be left to dry. It is advisable to air dry these rugs in order to maintain their texture and appearance.
Steam cleaning
Cowhide rugs come in a variety of shapes and patterns which can be used to create different types of geometric rugs. While these rugs look unique they often accumulate odors and stains. These can effectively be removed by using a vacuum and steam cleaner. The technique is effective for easily cleaning cowhide rugs.
